Fantastic four plus Bradley Whitford

When I first heard about The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants I though it was a really stupid title. Today I came across it again, but this time I took the time to realise that all four main actresses are favourites of mine. Alexis Bledel not so much (she also did the worst job on this movie), but I always liked Gilmore Girls so that kind of counts. I don’t watch Ugly Betty, but I’ve liked America Ferrera ever since she did Real women have curves. She’s lovely, and natural and has the most contagious smile. As does Blake Lively, whom until recently I didn’t even know. Thanks to Gossip Girl I now know about how contagious her smile can be. As for Amber Tamblyn how can you not love her when you’ve seen her in Joan of Arcadia. Damn that show was good and so was she.

The cherry on top in The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants? Bradley Whitford. I have so far liked him in every single thing I’ve seen him in. Damn it, that guy can really act.

If you’re not opposed to a little chick flick feeling á la Now and Then, then don’t let this movie pass you by like I did the first time around. It makes for a really nice evening on the couch :)

Btw: The girlfriend fell asleep about ten minutes into the movie. But that doesn’t actually mean anything. If we’re starting a movie after 11 p.m. that’s simply what she does.

Best. Sex scene. Ever.

okay, so much for the lesbian storyline on Californication. Apparently the smurf wants Charlie back. fine with me. at least the evil SM assistant is now going for mia, these two so deserve each other. only hank doesn’t deserve mia fucking him up so badly - “Hm… I can’t get to you sexually? well, then I’ll just steal your newest script and pretend it’s mine.” Seriously? I mean, seriously, does she expect that this will work? Great threesome though, you gotta adore Hank when he’s apathetically lying under a girl while charlie is giving her head and she female ejaculates all over his bowling ball(d) head while Karen and the smurf (ok, her name’s marcy) are looking on. That’s just fucking hilarious. Great TV moment.

someone should make an heroic effort to save this show

Heroes is boring me a tad lately. In fact, not Heroes in general, but most of the individual story lines. Okay, maybe that adds up to Heroes in general. What’s my beef with Chapter 4 - The Kindness of Strangers?

1. Why didn’t Parker let it go as soon as Molly gave him the address. He knew the city, he knew the street and he knew the building. He’s looking for his father, goddamnit, he knows what he looks like approximately and could just search the building. In a consistent writing world he would never have risked Molly.

2. Flying boy - what’s his face? annoys the shit out of me. He’s obnoxious and obtrusive and he really needs to leave Claire alone. Why on earth does she “have to trust him” so he “can help her”? Claire doesn’t need help, at least not from you, you creep.

3. Maya y Alejandro: naive people annoy me even more than obtrusive people. Oh let’s just tell a total stranger everything about ourselves. I’m not even going to comment on this irrational, stupid behaviour.

4. I know Hiro wasn’t in the episode, but the storyline with Takezo Kenzei should have ended last week. Like it almost did, until Hiro decided to stay a while after all. And all that for a woman…

5. Ali Larter needs to get more screen time, I’m beginning to really miss her.

6. I want to see Sylar go good. I like Zachary Quinto and think he could do a really good job portraying a shift in Sylar’s behaviour. I’d find it interesting.

Of course there’s positive stuff too:

I really like the new girl, Monica. Where did she get her fighting skills from? “Television.” Of course. The actor playing her little brother intrigued me, and I definitely know the actress playing her best friend from somewhere. But where? I’m going to have to check the credits again or simply wait, because imdb.com hasn’t many cast members listed yet for this episode.
I really want to know about Nathans face, unfortunately the graphic novels on nbc.com don’t say anything further on this matter, but actually include an incredibly weak Hiro-Manga-Pokémon comic. Don’t ask. And don’t look at it if you don’t want to waste your time.

I like how Mohinder, Matt and Molly are portrayed as a family. I don’t think they’re gay or anything, I just consider it a good thing to show that alternative families are a good and possible thing. I’ve decided to view it as a shoutout to all “alternative” “lifestyles”.

What got me yelling “ACUPUNCTURE”

Brothers & Sisters: it was a slow episode but mostly I was occupied anyway. I don’t get why they kept talking about ex-drug addict Justin taking painkillers, when really he could get pain-relief through alternative medicine. I kept alternately muttering and yelling “acupuncture” at the screen. How badly do the writers need the drug storyline? Considering they haven’t come up with many interesting story lines yet, maybe they do need it. It’s still Brothers & Sisters, and I still love it, but so far this season’s story lines fray out.

It’s Daisy Adair!

Despite the bad reviews (NYT, for instance) I’m going to give Women’s Murder Club the benefit of the doubt. The first episode I enjoyed. And if the dialogue doesn’t get bad and the cases are interesting I’ll be watching. What bugs me though is that the male characters are especially badly drawn (except for Lindsay’s partner maybe). What kind of men are they supposed to represent? I do like the women characters though. And what definitely helps to get me watching is that I enjoy Laura Harris (also known as George’s insufferable fellow reaper Daisy on Dead like me).

Anyway: Women’s Murder Club, Fridays on ABC

It’ll be like an early Christmas

That’s how much I am looking forward to The Golden Compass which is set to come out December 6th. I just hope it doesn’t take forever to get to Austria, because that one I’d really like to see on a big screen.

Ch-ch-ch-Changes?

It has become blatantly obvious to me that I can’t blog about every show I watch. with my weekly watchlist I’d be doing nothing else all day, especially futile since sometimes I feel like I’m blogging pretty much for myself here (which is why I’m thinking about combining my two blogs screenaddiction and food for thought) so from now on I’ll only blog about special tv moments. things that caught my attention, etc.

for example:

I loved Weeds this week. Loved loved loved it. The two Mrs. Scottsons: Mary-Louise Parker and Brooke Smith make a fine team. The pothead Christians and Shane’s remark that that’d actually explain a lot? Hilarious. I’m beginning to like Shane. And poor whored out Silas: “Make my son your bitch.” He so had it coming. And - I’m almost ashamed to say this - I even like Tara which means I think that the olsen girl is bearable.

Californication, what can I possibly say about Californication, that doesn’t involve me jumping up and down and screaming LESBIAN STORYLINE. I expect that the story of Charlie’s wife and Dani will not be featured much more, considering they’re not exactly main characters. but a girl can hope. Charlie so deserved that. Kudos to Californication for being such a “male” show yet not featuring the lesbians/bisexuals as entertainment for men but letting them have sex without men-involving purposes. That’s a rare thing.

After the usual two-episode warmup Heroes finally took off this week. SPOILER ALERT
I wasn’t too thrilled to see Sylar still alive (I consider it weak writing to bring back dead villains as dei ex machina), but once it was clear that he doesn’t have his powers anymore I realised that his part in this season could indeed be very interesting. Maya and Alejandro have to finally make it to the States - what else can delay them, it is taking ridiculously long and getting boring to see them on the run. Also they busted the American out of jail because he had a car, they were running out of the police station and Alejandro automatically knew which of the parked cars was the one in question. Wasn’t anyone else bothered by that?

News: Aliens in America is getting the axe - at least from me. I’ve tried. I’ve waited. Hoped that the addition of Scott Patterson to the cast might change the fact that this show is boring. Well, it didn’t. *snore* I have however started to watch The Big Bang Theory. Not grand, but I like me some geeks and Kaley Cuoco. Also featuring Sara Gilbert as a “love” interest for Leonard is a casting move worthy of recognition. Why? Because Leonard is played by Johnny Galecki, the guy who played Darlene’s boyfriend on Roseanne.

That’s it for today. I’ll keep thinking about my planned blog-combo.

exhilarating L Word-promo

First promo for the fifth season of The L Word - and I absolutely love it. It made me forget how disappointed I was in seasons two and three and how narrowly season four became a watchable show.

This one is the first L Word promo ever that truly makes me look forward to the next season. If the promo can already make me laugh and cry and cheer, then this could truly become a great season. Maybe I like it so much because it’s not so “drama queen” like, maybe because the song is simply magnificent, maybe because the shots are soft and nicely lighted. Whatever it is, I think I just became a fan again. But have a look for yourselves. And anyone know what the song is, please do tell me…

edit: apparently the song is Be Be Your Love by Rachael Yamagata

It’s not grand, but I think I like it

I didn’t want to watch it, just skipped through it a couple of days ago and decided to leave it. but somehow I ended up being bored and wanted some entertainment for breakfast today, so I undeleted the episode and actually watched it.

What I’m talking about is Moonlight, a new CBS-series about a good-hearted vampire P.I. It’s nothing original, the writing is not especially crafty, the characters reminded me of fellow vampire-camp Blood Ties, except they were more naive and - to me - more likeable. I just didn’t take to the vampire in Blood Ties, and it just didn’t make sense for me to keep watching just for Christina Cox. Also the base story didn’t intrigue me. However the character relationship between Beth and Mick in Moonlight interests me (for no good or apparent reason, it just does). And of course I enjoy seeing Jason Dohring in a different role. Logan ended up as such a whiner on Veronica Mars, I almost couldn’t bear to watch him anymore. Dohring as a 400-year old, capitalist, cynical vampire however make me smile. His acting seems to have gotten better, which may of course be because of external reasons like the character he’s playing. Generally I think it’s great that all three “main” (young) actors from Veronica Mars have gotten work already: Kristen Bell has a weekly audio appearance on the CW series Gossip Girl, Chris Lowell is doing Private Practice with Addison Kate Walsh.

I’m going to stay tuned for reasons I don’t know.To be precise Moonlight is one of the shows I have “on probation. Be warned: it’s not “great television”, I just watch it for entertainment. And I’m not going to deny you the scorchers: NYT, Variety

rapid fire movie review - Red Doors

“Red Doors is understated and tends toward offbeat humor, foraging for amusement amidst pain and regret.”

That’s what this review said

For me personally Red Doors  stands for the second movie I (almost) didn’t bear to watch today. The first was Saturday Night Fever and that we gave up half time into the film.

So Red Doors? Booooooooooooooring. It was nicely shot, but that definitely was all.The plot was at times standing still (it was probably meant like that, but the result just wasn’t good), the acting partly unbearable (the ex-bf? puh-leeze.), I didn’t get invested in the characters at all, and probably for the first time ever I couldn’t have cared less when two women kissed. No frickin’ chemistry! nothing. nada.

Someone please tell me how that movie won all its awards. Seriously. Tell me.
