sometimes i’m stupid. stubborn and stupid. for instance i refused to watch my name is earl for quite some time. I’ve owned the s1 dvd for half a year now or so, but it was just sitting there in my 80-dvd-box (yeah, it’s my pride, the simple things in life). the premise just didn’t get me, horrible guy gone good? from all that i had read about the show, it had that al-bundy-gone-good kinda vibe for me. wouldn’t have done it for me. fortunately last week i had too much time on my hands or too much procrastination going on – probably a combination of both – and i started watching my name is earl.
so far (middle of season 1) i love the show. its characters are well developed which is a hard thing to do in a 20 min show. well the kids are kinda faceless to me. but overall the characters are lovable, even joy, and ultimately good people. i.e. earl doesn’t mean it derogatively when he calls darnell “crabman” and also darnell doesn’t take it as an insult. randy is depicted as “slow” yet never as basically unintelligent, he just needs a little time to understand things other people understand faster, but he can lovingly dwell on things and ponder thoughts others would merely let pass. also i’ve always liked jamie pressly and i’m taking a liking to jason lee (hell, i’ve only seen dogma once so i couldn’t actually remember him). overall: good show so far.
my other (not so new) new show is the new adventures of old christine. with that I’m still struggling. I enjoy almost all characters – except christine. she’s stupid and annoying and i try to like her but i can’t. but i find myself watching because of the other characters. and well, maybe also cause i’m a tv-geek.
