1. OK, there’s not much to say about Sancharram (The Journey), other than it’s the coming-of-age story of a young lesbian emancipating herself from tradition and convention to go her own way. Oh, and that she’s a lezzie in India, where it seems obviously much harder to achieve that. The ending was vague – I’m still pondering if it was too vague. Also I was continually prepared for someone to die, cuz any Indian movie I’ve seen so far someone had to go (slowly and painfully usually). But: vague ending. In any case it was a wee bit to slow a movie, but I did enjoy it. Somehow I had endured the slowness much better than the gf who is usually the one to have the patience of a saint while I fidget. I was actually to curious as to what would happen to fidget this time. I especially admire how they managed not to show anything explicitly but convey the feelings the two girls have for each other in those tiny tiny gestures (both in the acting as well as in the way it was shot). Here’s the official movie website.
2. I have a new guilty pleasure. I don’t usually enjoy reality shows, the only one I watch is American Idol, but I have taken a liking to Fight Girls. The show airs on Oxygen and I just watched the first episode which aired last night. I had already suspected I was going to like it when the show got picked up, because seriously, hot girls kick ass – how on earth would I not like that?! The show puts 10 girls who have experience in whatever kind of combat in one house and each week two get to fight agains each other in a Muay Thai battle. The 5 winners of these fight’s go to Thailand, were Muay Thai originated, to fight a Muay Thai champion.
…SPOILER COMING… highlight if you don’t give a fuck.
When the first two girls were pinned against each other I was dead sure Gina would win, mostly probably because girly girl Felice annoyed me. But it turned out Felice really IS a bulldog, because she is fuelled by so much willpower that Gina’s blows looked feeble next to hers. She won fair.
What I like about the show is that it a) shows strong women kick ass and b) tries to encourage other women to do this as well, to train and/or kick ass
No, seriously, it’s probably not the fighting style I’d choose, I’ll stick to Shinergy, but they’re trying to get people to move and find an outlet and I like it. What bugs me though is that they focus only on the two girls who are up against each other each week, you don’t get to see much of the other ones so it’s hard to get rooting for one. But for now (and that’s without having seen them fight yet) I pick Kerry and Lisa as my faves. OK and maybe Jeanine and Michelle too
Tonight at the movies (and me VERY much looking forward to it):
